Corrosion Inhibitors

Corrosion inhibitors are chemical compounds that are added in small concentration to a fluid to minimize or prevent the corrosion-related problems triggered by widely varying processing conditions and concentrations of salts and water at different stages of oil and gas processes.

Applications

Continuous Application
  • These are organic inhibitors and mostly surface active. They can be injected upstream or downstream and generally designed to protect the pipeline tubing and production equipment.
  • Continuous injection of minimum concentration will help to protect the system from corrosion. They can be oil soluble or water soluble and can be applied for gas, oil and water phase systems.
Neutralizing Inhibitor
  • Some oil field system where the aqueous phase is predominantly fresh, condensed water or the sour gases are the source of corrosion, effective corrosion control is possible by simply raising the pH.
  • In the wet gas lines and in glycol regenerating units, neutralizing inhibitors are used.
  • In refinery operation these inhibitors are widely used.
Batch Application
  • Batch corrosion inhibitors are mainly oil soluble & are widely used for the corrosion control of production wells and pipelines in the oil and gas industry.
  • Rules of thumb that incorporate film thickness, contact time and surface area are still commonly used to calculate the volume of batch inhibitor required for pipeline applications.
Top of Line Corrosion Control
  • This type of corrosion occurs in the wet gas pipelines when there is a temperature difference exposure and also when the flow regime is a wavy stratified flow.
  • Corrosion inhibitors developed are mainly with volatile amines.
